OVERVIEW Scheyer has the ability to score in a variety of ways and set up his teammates, his well-rounded game made him one of the top guards in the nation, leading Duke to the national championship last season.
An excellent ball-handler and defender who has recorded more steals than turnovers in each of the past two seasons, Scheyer is one of 27 players in school history with at least 100 career victories and one of 18 Blue Devils to score at least 500 points for the second straight season. He was also just the fourth player at Duke with 500 points and 100 assists in back-to-back seasons.
Scheyer ended his college career as one of the top free throw shooters in Atlantic Coast Conference history, ranking fifth all-time (second at Duke) with a career .861 free throw percentage (608-of-706). His 608 made free throws rank as the third most in school history. He also ranks fourth at Duke with 297 career three-point field goals.
Scheyer is the only player in Duke history to record at least 2,000 points (2,077; ninth), 500 rebounds (522), 400 assists (440; 12th), 250 made three-point field goals (297) and 200 steals (208; eighth). The two-time team captain scored in double figures 113 times, the sixth-best career total by a Blue Devil.
Scheyer earned four letters at Glenbrook North High School. He ranks fourth in Illinois High School basketball history in scoring with 3,034 points. He is the only player in Illinois history to rank in the all-time top 10 in points, steals and assists and was named to the 100 Legends of Illinois Basketball (1908-2007).
The two-time Gatorade state Player of the Year and three-time All-State selection was the only unanimous Class AA All-State pick in 2006, adding first-team Parade and Jordan All-American honors as a senior. He averaged 32 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Spartans that year, including scoring 21 points in 75 seconds at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament.
Scheyer averaged 15 points, four rebounds and three assists as a freshman. The next season, he led the team with averages of 25 points, five rebounds and four assists as a sophomore, followed by averages of 26.3 points, five rebounds and five assists as a junior, leading the team to 24 consecutive wins and a state championship, as he knocked down eight three-pointers and scored 48 points on 15-of-23 shooting in a 70-58 win over Waukegan in the supersectionals of the 2005 state tournament.
Scheyer scored 42 points in the championship game of the 2005 Orlando Super Showcase. In summer league action, he led the Illinois Warriors to the 2004 AAU Peach Jam Championship. Named a McDonald's All-America selection, he helped the West team to a 112-94 victory at the 2006 McDonald's All-American game, as he scored nine points on 3-of-4 shooting, including 2-of-2 from three-point distance, in 15 minutes of action. He also had four assists and three rebounds.
Scheyer was ranked 30th by The Recruiting Services Consensus Index after his senior prep season. He was a member of the U.S. Junior National Select team that posted a 109-91 win over the World Select team at the 2006 Nike Hoops Summit. He previously helped the USA Youth Development Festival Red Team to a bronze medal at the 2005 International Sports Invitational in San Diego, as he averaged 6.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in five contests.
Scheyer was a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman team in 2006-07. He ranked fifth among the league's freshmen in scoring, averaging 12.2 points per game. He placed third in the ACC in free throw percentage (.846), as he made 40 consecutive attempts at one point, the third-longest streak in school history. He also handed out 61 assists to go with 39 steals and 110 rebounds (3.3 per game).
As a sophomore, Scheyer ranked second in the league and 12th in the nation with a free throw percentage of .889. He scored in double figures 23 times, despite starting just one of 34 games. He finished with 11.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
In 2008-09, Scheyer was named the ACC Tournament MVP. He started 35 games, scoring in double figures 30 times. He ranked 14th in the conference in scoring (14.9 points per game), seventh in free throw percentage (.836) and tied for eighth in steals (46).
A consensus All-American second-team pick as a senior, Scheyer was also chosen All-ACC first-team and named to the ACC All-Tournament squad. He scored double figures 38 times in 40 contests, including seventeen 20-point performances. He took down 144 rebounds, collected 194 assists and totaled 65 steals.

Compares To: LUTHER HEAD, Indiana -- Scheyer could become a nice option off the bench as a perimeter scorer and third point guard. He lacks ideal athleticism and strength to be a shooting guard and will be challenged to defend his position. He can be a lights-out shooter when given space, but takes too many off-balance and contested shots. He lacks the power and lateral movement to stay in front of his man when defending the basket. Still, his perimeter shooting makes him a second-round target.
