HEADER CHRISTIAN EYENGA MOENGE Small Forward/ Shooting Guard Prat/DKV Joventut, Spain #8 6:05.0-209 Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo
OVERVIEW The Joventut parent team expected to see star Ricky Rubio leave Spain for the United States. It had high hopes that Eyenga would step in and fill the void.
But the shooting guard surprised the organization, one struggling to meet payroll, when he announced that he would join Rubio in entering his name in the 2009 NBA Draft.
A late bloomer who was discovered while playing basketball in the Republic of the Congo, Eyenga made his organized basketball debut with Onatra Kinshasa (Congo) during the 2006 season and later led that squad to the 2007 African Championship as a member of his country's U-18 team.
Eyenga moved to Spain for the 2007-08 season, signing with Joventut Badalona, as he went on to play for that organization's CB Prat, LEB-Silver and men's squads. In 19 games for the Prat squad, he was brought along slowly while acclimating to the league's fast pace. Utilized at the two-guard and small forward positions, he totaled 78 points (4.1 per game) and shot 55 percent from two-point range. He also averaged 2.8 rebounds.
NBA scouts began to take notice of Eyenga's explosive leaping and superb athleticism during the four games he played with Joventut Badalona in the 2008 Euroleague, as he only logged sixteen minutes of action, but showed during practices that big things were about to happen for him.
After the Euroleague, Eyenga rejoined the Prat Junentud squad. He finished fourth in the LEB Silver division with 40 blocked shots (1.6 per game) in 25 games with the junior squad. He scored 332 points (13.3 per game) and shot 55 percent from the field, including 34.6 percent from 3-point range and averaged 5.1 rebounds and 1.1 steals.
2008-09 SEASON Eyenga played in a total of 29 games; four with the DKV Joventut Badalona squad during Euroleague competition (replaced an injured Ricky Rubio on the roster) and 25 with the CB Prat Juventud team...Combined, he scored 335 points (11.6 per game), hitting 54.3 percent from two-point field goal range (100 of 184), 34.6 percent from 3-point territory (27 of 78) and 71.1 percent from the foul line (54 of 76) while logging a total of 774 minutes on the court...Charged with 65 personal fouls, but led the LEB-Silver Division with an average of 1.6 blocked shots per game (1.4 per game overall -- 40 total blocks, including 39 in the LEB)...Grabbed 127 rebounds (4.4 per game), handed out 16 assists (0.6 per game) and had 27 steals (1.1 per game)...Scored in double figures in 18 of 25 games for Prat and twice had at least 10 rebounds.
2007-08 SEASON Appeared in 19 games for the Prat Juventud squad, scoring 78 points (4.1 per game) on 33 of 60 two-pointers (55.0 percent), 3 of 12 3-pointers (25.0 percent) and 3 of 8 free throws (37.5 percent)...Collected 53 rebounds (2.8 per game), nine blocks (0.5 per game) and 16 personal fouls...Credited with four assists (0.2 per game) and seven steals (0.4 per game).
CAREER NOTES In his last two seasons -- 48 total games -- Eyenga scored 413 points (8.6 per game), as he connected on 133 of 244 two-point field goals (54.5 percent), 30 of 90 3-pointers (33.3 percent) and 57 of 84 free throws (67.9 percent)...Grabbed 180 rebounds (3.8 per game) and blocked 49 shots (1.0 per game)...Registered 20 assists (0.4 per game) and 34 steals (0.7 per game) while being charged with 81 personal fouls.
INJURY REPORT No injuries reported.
PERSONAL Born Jan. 22, 1989 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
SCOUTING REPORT Positives: Raw but he has a wingspan of nearly 7 feet, which is superb for a shooting guard/small forward, with good court quickness and lateral agility...Very good natural tools...Showed improvement creating his own shot along the perimeter and has surprising quickness slashing to the basket...Has increased his weight and improved his strength to better handle punishment inside...Draws contact on the way to the basketball, using his length well to finish with dunks and aggressively attacking the rim...Explosive leaper who is starting to come into his own on the defensive end, ranking fourth in the league in blocked shots last season...Has the elevation, reach and timing to contest shots regularly...Has an NBA-ready body and is powerful enough to take on bigger frontcourt players trying to establish position under the basket (pulled down 127 boards in 29 games in 2008-09)...Improved his hand usage in his second year with the team, uses his low center of gravity and lateral agility to get into the passing lanes and cause problems (27 steals in 2008-09)...Creates mismatches vs. small forwards with an explosive first step to beat his man off the dribble and is slowly developing a nice array of moves (spins, hesitations, fakes) to slip away and get space to take his jumper...His ball-handling skills are a work in progress, but he has decent passing ability when double-teamed...His basketball IQ still is developing, but he is not as easily fooled by shooters despite limited basketball experience...Good finisher in transition and has improved his scoring touch from the foul line...More comfortable at the two-guard position, but shows the athleticism to take on small forwards and as his frame continues to mature, he will more likely reside there in the NBA...Demonstrates decent passing ability to the open outlet to also earn some minutes at point forward...Can score off the dribble and has developed a nice fade-away jumper...Demonstrates fluid mechanics, can get his shot up and over much taller opponents...Attacks the lane with a vengeance and can hang in the air to draw contact...Times his leaps to come down with the ball or get up to put it back at its high point...Patient player who lets the action come to him rather than try to force the issue...Can get to the basket after being fed the ball off screens...Will sacrifice his body to chase loose balls...Uses his reach and keeps his arms active to steal the ball or change shots when applying pressure defense...Sets his feet to uncork his mid-range jumper...Crowd pleaser with aggressiveness going to the rim, whether on the break or by going over the opponent...Shows good shooting for firing from behind the arc, demonstrating that sudden release and elevation connecting from the outside...Is quick and elusive with the ability to vary speeds...Has solid overall defensive skills and will not hesitate to draw a charge.
Negatives: Still in the developmental stage and could have used a few more years with the parent Joventut team to mature, but the organization is having financial issues, which contributed to Eyenga's decision and he might be a strong candidate for the D-League...Has a high release point to get the ball over defenders, but pushes the ball quite a bit and needs to develop better rotation and accuracy and balance shooting from the perimeter...Still learning how to trust his off hand, is too predictable as a scorer, constantly favoring his right hand...Has excellent elevation, but will leave his feet early and doesn't have natural timing as a rebounder...Was forced to play power forward and will need a few years to develop a well-round game on the wing, as his frame will never develop into an NBA type four-forward.
Compares To: NICOLAS BATUM, Portland -- Eyenga needs time to acclimate to the NBA and also to playing on the wing. He has developing offensive skills, but could be a nice value pick for a team willing to nurture him by bringing him off the bench due to his defensive presence. He is more quick than he is fast, but has had good success playing the European, open-court style. He played more at power forward in Spain, but he lacks the size to play that position at the NBA level. He could put up points, contest a few shots and combat under the boards to become a vital reserve as a "4" in a small lineup or a regular wing player.
