HEADER RODRIGUE BEAUBOIS Point Guard Cholet Basket, France #8 6:01.2-183 Point-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe
OVERVIEW An emerging international talent, Beaubois was discovered while attending a basketball camp held by Orlando Magic shooting guard Mickael Pietrus, by Pietrus' agent and manager, Raoul Ramdine, who had heard of the youngster from some coaches in Guadeloupe. Ramdine had played for the same youth team as Beaubois. After five minutes of watching him practice, his talent level was evident and he was told he could play professionally.
Ramdine quickly got on the phone to put the word out, speaking with Beaubois' current Cholet team who said they weren't going to send someone to see a 17-year-old that was still in Guadeloupe. On a trip to see a forward in Martinique (an island 20 minutes from Guadeloupe) they made a stop to see a practice involving Rodrigue.
Ramdine quickly got a call in which Cholet management presented the player with a contract. Before Cholet offered him that professional contract, there was one United States university that showed interest in him -- Northeastern -- but the guard chose to sign with Cholet instead.
He went on to play for France's U-19 squad, going on to play in 77 professional games. Having declared for the 2007 and '08 NBA drafts, but withdrawing after not getting first-round consideration, this is his final year to enter the draft.
Beaubois made a very good impression at the Reebok Eurocamp and many scouts consider him to be the next French import to succeed in the NBA. He played for the New Star Hopes basketball program in 2005 and spent the latter portion of that year at the Cholet Basket Training Centre. In 2006-07, he appeared in five French ProA League games, but did not score any points in 17 minutes of action. He had a pair of steals, one assist and one blocked shot. He also played on France's U-16 squad. In 2007, he was again a member of the French National team, participating in U-19 action.
Beaubois appeared in a total of 24 games for Cholet during the 2007-08 season. He averaged 5.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 15.1 minutes per game. He collected 18 steals and showed off his excellent leaping ability, blocking 10 shots.
Beaubois took over point guard duties for Cholet in 2008-09, earning team MVP honors, as their previous two-time MVP, Nando De Colo shifted to shooting guard to accommodate space for the youngster in the lineup. He amassed 478 points (10.0 per game) in a total of 48 games, hitting on 117 of 187 field goals (62.6 percent) from two-point range and connected on 70 of 196 3-pointers (35.7 percent). He doled out 108 assists to go with 55 steals and 126 rebounds (2.6 rebounds per game), getting 22 of those boards off the offensive glass.
2008-09 SEASON Appeared in a total of 48 games, logging 1,038 minutes of action (21.6 per game) while taking over point guard duties...Scored a career-high 478 points (10.0 per game), as he shot 62.6 percent from two-point range (117 of 187) and 35.7 percent from 3-point territory (70 of 196)...Had a 60.7 percent success rate from the foul line (34 of 56), as he pulled down 126 rebounds (2.6 rebounds per game) and blocked 16 shots (0.3 blocks per game)...Handed out 108 assists (2.3 per game) to go with 55 turnovers (1.1 per game) and 55 steals (1.1 per game).

2006-07 SEASON Spent most of the year with the French National U-19 team, but also saw five games of action with Cholet Basket...Did not score any points while playing a total of 17 minutes, but did have one assist, one blocked shot and two steals.
CAREER NOTES In 77 games for Cholet, encompassing Euro Cup, Euro Challenge and French ProA League competition, Beaubois logged 1,418 minutes of action (18.4 minutes per game), as he scored 614 points (8.0 points per game), making 146 of 242 two-point field goals (60.3 percent), 93 of 251 3-point attempts (37.1 percent) and 43 of 70 free throws (61.4 percent)...Grabbed 168 rebounds (2.2 rebounds per game), including 34 offensive boards, as he was credited with 141 assists (1.8 per game), 75 steals (1.0 per game), 27 blocked shots (0.4 per game) and 79 turnovers (1.0 per game).
INJURY REPORT 2007: Suffered a finger injury that affected his shooting during the 2007 Reebok Eurocamp.
OTHER TOURNAMENTS/TEAMS FRENCH NATIONAL TEAM: Began cadet competition with the New Star organization in 2005...Played for both the French National U-16 and U-19 squads during the 2006-07 campaigns.
PERSONAL The French national was born Rodrigue Beaubois, (pronounced Boo-Bwah) on 2/24/88 in Pointe a Pitre, Guadeloupe.
SCOUTING REPORT Positives: Quick guard with good ball-handling and passing skills...Has the natural tools to be a good defender -- uses his wingspan and lateral agility to stay in front of shooters...Has advanced ball skills, especially distributing on transition plays...Has become much more comfortable on the offensive end, showing the ability to create his own shot...Has excellent quickness pushing the ball up the court and uses his length well to contest shots, blocking 16 this season...Aggressive with his straight-line charge to the basket and even though his numbers were down this year, he has a quick release shooting from the charity stripe...Also has valid NBA 3-point range, making 37.1 percent the last two seasons...One of the quickest point guards in this draft, he has no problem slashing when the lane opens up...Lockdown defender in one-on-one situations, knows how to use his great wingspan (6'9 3/4") to engulf the shooter...Despite his size, he is determined to get to rebounds, converting more than 60 percent of his chances on putbacks when taking the ball from the offensive glass...Has a good handle on the ball, especially when executing dish-and-drive plays...Has a bit of Tony Parker in him, as his lateral agility and body control allow him to shift gears in an instant...Has developed the savvy spin moves and hesitation move to get separation on the way to the basket...Plays to the crowd too much at times but he rarely gets out of control with his demeanor to draw foolish fouls...Has great balance to stop on a dime, forcing the defender to give him the space needed to fade back and deliver a jumper or push the ball with a soft floater...Shoots with a quick and high release, getting enough elevation while setting his feet to come off the floor and fire over the top of an opponent...Does a nice job of shooting off the dribble and delivers crisp passes out of double teams to an open target...His great court vision and impressive maturity are shown in his remarkable low turnover totals (79 in 77 games).
Negatives: Did not begin playing basketball until his teens and still needs to work on a few areas of his game, including his release point on free throw attempts (60.7 percent shooter from the charity stripe last season)...Good ball-handler, but needs to develop a "pass first, shoot later" mentality true point guards have...His assist totals (141 in 77 games) are remarkably low...Has good range from the perimeter, but when he pushes the ball from his chest, he loses elevation and accuracy (3-point accuracy dropped from 43.4 percent in 2007-08 to 35.7 percent this season)...Still learning the nuances of the game and while he has good strength, some wonder if his frail frame can withstand NBA-type punishment...Because of his lack of bulk, he has problems vs. more physical opponents when trying to fight through screens...Good on-ball defender, but he gets a bit overconfident and will lunge and miss...Bit of an introvert and too shy, needing to develop better on-court leadership skills.
Compares To: RONNIE PRICE, Utah -- Beaubois is like a condor smothering its prey with his incredible wingspan when covering other guards. His offensive game is starting to evolve, but teams need to realize he has just three years of organized basketball experience. He gets a bit reckless with his passing at times and to be considered a starting point guard in the NBA, he is going to have to become a facilitator with the ball.
