HEADER HENK NOREL Power Forward/Center DKV Joventit Badalona, Spain #17 6:10.7-226 Gorinchem, Holland Alicante Costa Blanca (LEB Gold)
OVERVIEW A versatile athlete with experience at center and power forward, Norel is a nice fit for an up-tempo offensive attack, thanks to his quickness and passing skills. The Dutch National is well known in the Spanish Leagues, playing club basketball in that country and for DKV Joventut before joining Alicante Costa Blanca in 2007-08 and then returning to Joventut this season.
For the last four seasons, Norel has shown a great commitment to playing defense, as his work ethic is regarded as the best on the team, according to the coaching staff. He has yet to discover a consistent offensive game, but he has the quickness to run the floor and gets most of his scoring opportunities by using his high elevation skills to crash the offensive glass.
In 2005-06, Norel played in a total of 41 games, including 18 with DKV Joventut and 23 more with Club Basketball (Pratt). He averaged 12.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, as he blocked 29 shots. He shot 62.5 percent from two-point range, made 35.4 percent of his three-pointers and shot 59.3 percent from the foul line.
The following season, Noel competed in 47 contests (15 for DKV Joventut; 32 for Club Basketball). He accounted for a career-high 619 points (13.2 ppg), as he grabbed 394 rebounds (8.4 rpg) and blocked 17 shots. He had 30 steals with 26 assists, making 265 of 422 field goals, including 14 of 43 from three-point range.
Playing at both center and power forward for Alicante Costa Blanca, Norel saw action in 39 games during the 2007-08 season. He totaled 366 points (9.4 ppg), making 62.8 percent of his two-point tries (142 of 226) and 11 of 25 three-pointers. He shot a career-best 61.0 percent from the free-throw line and snared 185 rebounds (4.7 rpg) while blocking a career-high 42 shots.
He led Alicante in scoring, two-point field goal percentage, rebounds and blocked shots. Hoping to test his wares in the United States, he applied for entry in the 2008 NBA Draft, but later withdrew his name from consideration.
Back with the parent club in 2008-09, Norel averaged just 12.1 minutes per game while appearing in a total of 33 games for DKV Joventut. He totaled 161 points (4.9 ppg), his lowest scoring average in four professional seasons. He also saw his rebounding totals (2.6 rpg) reduced, thanks to his sporadic minutes.
Yet, NBA scouts made regular visits to see him compete, walking away impressed with what he produced during minimal playing time. Many feel that with an additional 15-20 pounds on his frame, he could be NBA-ready within a few years and Norel seems to agree, hoping to hear his name called in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft.

INJURY REPORT No injuries reported.
PERSONAL Born 9/17/87...Hometown is Gorinchem, Holland, The Netherlands.
SCOUTING REPORT Positives: Has an adequate frame with good arm length and shoulder muscle tone and decent foot quickness, but is built more in the lines of an oversized small forward, lacking the bulk you want in a power forward or center...Shows good stamina getting up and down the court and very good field vision, as he is quick to pass the ball out to an open man when double teamed...Despite lacking ideal strength, he does a good job of absorbing contact on the way to the basket to get to the foul line, but needs to improve his free throw shooting mechanics...Has above average ball handling skills for a player his size, doing a nice job of kicking it out to the perimeter...Demonstrates a strong defensive commitment, where his wingspan, fluid running style and ability to run the floor has helped him develop into a solid lockdown performer when challenging wing players...Even though his offensive game has yet to emerge, he shows a nice touch, especially on pick-and-roll plays and excellent hands to kick the ball out to an open teammate...Shows good off-the-ball movement skills, whether passing the ball out or reaching around to create the turnover...Still lacks over-all consistency, but has the range to shoot behind the arc...Not the type that needs to have the ball in his hand to contribute...Uses his size and leaping ability to dunk the ball coming off pick-and-rolls...Shows good body control and balance, moving his feet well to hedge on screens...Has enough range to make NBA-caliber three-point shots... Unselfish player with the ability to fire out crisp passes when playing in a crowd under the basket... Can also make the emphatic one-handed dunk, or put in the soft floater, showing good timing and the ability to elevate, even in small areas...Decent ball handler with soft hands...Uses fluid spin moves to escape a face-up defender playing in the low post... When the inside is clogged, he has enough confidence in his turnaround jumper or he can angle to get into position, as he is capable of executing the mini jump hook with either hand...Can also put the ball on the floor for a limited time with either hand...Likes to execute his mid-range jump shot, displaying a quick stroke and a high release point...Demonstrates good elevation and while he lacks ideal strength, he is good at slipping under bigger opponents to get to the basket for rebounds...Gets very good elevation, along with precise timing, to spend a lot of his time playing above the rim...Will get banged around quite a bit in the paint due to bulk issues, but is always in position to compete for the rebound or put-backs...Shows good lateral quickness staying in front of the perimeter shooters.
Negatives: Needs to add considerable bulk to his lanky frame, as he lacks the strength to establish position under the rim and is often physically handled in the paint by the four- and five-spot types (his ability to run the floor could see him move to small forward if he has problems adding more weight)...Has good court vision, but as a perimeter defender he leaves the ground too early and is susceptible to good pump fakes...Has struggled to add weight in the past...Has a high release point shooting from the perimeter, but is a bit too methodical and needs to get the ball off quicker...Needs to stay lower to the ground, especially when setting up the screens, as he gets pushed around quite a bit and loses balance when a defender gets too physical with him...Needs to refine his shooting mechanics, as he will move his elbow erratically before unleashing the ball, leading to accuracy problems (seems to push it forward too hard rather than have it roll off his fingers)...Does not like playing down low when he is manned up vs. a more physical opponent.
Compares To: FABRICIO OBERTO, San Antonio -- Like Oberto and Hakim Warrick of Toronto, the only way Norel will get decent minutes is if he bulks up considerably. He has obvious problems establishing position vs. the bigger forwards, but does have the quick feet to defend vs. the speedier opponents. He has a developing mid-range shot and could contribute near the end of the bench right now. In a few years, he will be capable of being a part of the main rotation, but is more of a supporting cast type that will dig the ball out from double teams, take the ball to the basket and slip under opponents to get some quality offensive boards.
