HEADER RICKY RUBIO Point Guard DKV Jovenut Jugadors, Spain #9 6:04.0-182 El Masnou, Spain Joventut Badalona
OVERVIEW No European player has generated as much excitement among NBA executives as Rubio has. The talented 18-year-old has been on the scouting radar ever since he left the cadet ranks to join DKV Jovenut for the 2005-06 season. The comparisons by league scouts have many expecting Rubio to be part Pete Maravich (for his shooting touch), part Jason Kidd (for his assist skills), part Steve Nash (for his all-out hustle) and part Walt Frazier (for his passing ability).
Rubio began competing in 2003-04, quickly establishing himself as the premier athlete on the Joventut Badalona (Spain) youth teams. He made his debut with the cadet squad during the 2005-06 season, in addition to playing on Spain's U-16 team. He also saw action in 10 games for DKV Joventut in the ACB League, as he averaged 2.5 points, 0.9 assists and 1.2 rebounds with logging an average of eight minutes in each contest.
Rubio led the Joventut Badalona cadets to the 2006 FIBA EuroCup Championship. He won the gold medal at the 2006 European U-16 Championship and also led the 2006-07 Spanish League in steals (2.3 spg.). For JKV Joventut, he averaged 18.9 minutes, 3.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.2 steals per game while appearing in sixteen contests with the parent club.
The youngster drew heavy praise from the President of the Spanish Basketball Federation and was being compared with the all-time greatest European guard, Drazen Petrovic. The combo guard was the youngest player in the league, but still demonstrated excellent quickness and explosiveness. He was regarded as Spain's best slasher and passer, skills he used to take over as Joventut's point guard the following year.
The Spanish Federation wanted Rubio to play for both the U-16 and U-18 teams in 2006, but the 15-year-old opted to perform for the U-16 squad at the European Championships. In the semifinals vs. a much bigger Croatian team, the point guard established his pedigree in just 33 minutes of action. All he did was register a quadruple-double, as he tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists and 11 steals.
The Russian team battled Spain fiercely in the championship game, but Rubio took control down the stretch, leading his countrymen to an overtime win with a three-pointer with two seconds left on the game clock. He finished that game with 51 points, 24 rebounds, 12 assists and seven steals.
Back with DKV Joventut right after his 16 birthday, Rubio shared point guard duties with Elmer Bennett. He was brought along slowly under the guidance of coach Aito Garcia-Reneses, who is known for developing the skills of Juan Carlos Navarro (ex-Memphis), Pau Gasol (L.A. Lakers) and Rudy Fernandez (Portland). In 33 contests, he had averages of 19 minutes, 4.8 points, 2.3 steals, 2.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds.
In 2007-08, Rubio played in a total of 50 games for DKV Joventut, including 34 in the ACB League and 16 more in EuroCup action. In the Spanish League competition, he averaged 23 minutes per game, scoring 357 points (10.5 ppg), while shooting 80.1 percent from the free-throw line, pulling down 109 rebounds (3.2 rpg) and handing out 136 assists (4.0 apg). He also averaged 7.8 points, 4.5 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game in EuroCup competition.
Rubio appeared in five EuroCup games during the 2008-09 campaign, but struggled to find his shot, as he averaged just 2.4 points per game. He was still recovering from October surgery on his right wrist and was sidelined for six weeks, after first suffering the injury in the 2008 Olympic Games final, in which Spain faced the United States for the gold medal.
Rubio underwent a wrist arthroscopy at USP Institut Universitari Dexeus to find out that he had a fractured ligament. Once the fracture was confirmed, open surgery was needed to piece together his ligament with intraosseous suture. He returned to play in 22 games for DKV Joventut, logging 10.0 points, 6.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game in 506 minutes of action.

PERSONAL Born on 10/21/90 in Barcelona, Spain...Resides in El Masnou, Spain.
SCOUTING REPORT Positives: Lanky athlete who needs to improve his overall strength, but has an impressive wingspan (6-9) and his body continues to grow and mature...His right wrist injury in the 2008 Olympics actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The injury forced Rubio to work with his left hand while recovering and he is now very capable of creating with either hand (enough to be considered ambidextrous), showing above average ball handling skills...Has very quick decision making skills, as the crafty youngster excels executing the pick-and-roll plays, doing a nice job of drawing contact to get to the free-throw line...Highly intelligent player, especially one for his age and is creative with the ball in his hands, doing a nice job of keeping his teammates involved...Has excellent open-court quickness and shows the ability to shift gears and force the defender to commit early with his savvy hesitation moves...Has the loose hips to change direction in an instant uses his reach and elevation to contest shots and crash the boards for the offensive rebounds...Shows good defensive presence, ranking among the ACB leaders in steals the last three years, thanks to his ability to get into the passing lanes and use his reach to dislodge the shooter from the ball...Unselfish ball handler who strives when creating shots for others, thanks to his peripheral court vision (draws comparisons to former Knicks guard Walt Frazier for his timely passes and ability to scan the court)...Does a nice job of bringing the ball down the court and can fool a defender with his slow stride, taking them into a false sense of security before turning on the second gear to fly past the opponent...Shifts gears with no wasted motion and is regarded as the best slasher among this year's draft prospects (does a great job on the crossover to pick apart the defense and finish around the basket with a smooth floater)...Too slippery on the move for an opponent to think they can contain him with double-teams...His scoring game is still developing, but he is much like Jason Kidd, as he much rather feed a teammate than take an ill-advised shot...Shows very good precision on his passes, as he easily gets the ball to a cutting teammate with no hesitation on the way for a crisp lay-up...Like a traffic cop on the court and despite his young age, the veterans follow his lead, knowing that he has the has the ability to get them in the proper set to make the play...Uses his body and anticipation skills well to prevent the perimeter shooter from slashing to the basket...Has large, natural hands, catching the ball and firing it off with no wasted motion...Has the court speed to make the transition to the NBA fast-break...Demonstrates a high basketball IQ, along with very good maturity for a player his age...Excites the crowd with his one-handed passes, generating very good zip on his throws, as he uses his reach to fire balls over the defense to generate the fast break and is also very effective at pulling down the rebound and firing off an outlet pass to a teammate on the fast break...His court quickness sees him regularly slip by the defender to get into the lanes...Likes to execute the crisp transition passes, especially when he is operating in traffic, as he will force the defender to commit by driving to the rim and suddenly flipping the ball out to an open teammate...Despite his lanky frame, he has the ability to slip past bigger defenders to get into position to make the rebound off either board...His court quickness is evident on the defensive glass, as he is able to get the ball on the rebound and push it down the court in a hurry...His quick feet and reach-around skills make him one of the best ball thieves to come out of Europe since Drazen Petrovic... Needs to get off his perimeter shots quicker, but has the range to make shots from the NBA three-point area (needs spacing to be effective)...Also regarded as Europe's best pick-and-roll performer, converting more than 62 percent of his offensive possessions...Plays with a strong defensive mentality, knowing how to use his body and get into position and post up the opponent...Looks natural running the court and shows a strong concept for taking angles to slip past and avoid bigger forwards when driving in the paint...All-out hustler with no regard for his safety chasing down loose balls, and he has great anticipation for the opponent's moves in the passing lane, resulting in his high amount of steals (good hand checker), as he knows how to angle in attempts to disrupt the pass and use his wingspan to create the turnover...Uses his lanky frame effectively to get between the ball handler and the sidelines to disrupt the pass when operating along the weak side.
Negatives: Has just average athleticism and adequate explosiveness, relying more on taking angles to slip through traffic...Needs to get stronger to compete at the NBA level, as he lacks the power to work his way through screens or finish consistently around the basket...Could court leader, but is a bit of a loner and just not "one of the guys" in the locker room (could be due to his very young age and a team that has lots of grizzled veterans)...Turnover prone, especially along the perimeter, as his slow release lets the opponent get into position to defend (will also get impatient at times, trying to force his shot too much when facing up vs. a stronger defender)...Still working on his scoring touch, especially ineffective shooting off the dribble...His body is still maturing and developing, but you can see that he has just average leg strength...Has a good concept for angling, but lacks the lateral agility to stay in front of slashing NBA type point guards (susceptible to back-door cuts)...Not a great leaper, failing to get good elevation when trying to execute his static jump shot, especially from mid-range and on the perimeter... Has good footwork with the ball in his hands, but does not show the explosiveness needed to finish when driving through traffic (can draw contact to get to the line, though).
Compares To: JASON KIDD, Dallas -- There is a lot of Rubio's game that will remind scouts of several players, but his overall game is more reminiscent to that of Kidd's. He has the passing ability that will remind Knicks fans of Walt Frazier and the hustling ability that will see some compare him to Steve Nash. His scoring touch is improving, but he is a point guard, first and foremost, as he would much rather set up an open teammate than create for himself, much like Kidd has done in recent years. The right wrist injury forced him to become a much better passer, as he put in quite a few hours working with his left hand while recovering. Imagine him feeding teammates with outlet passes or being a total nuisance disrupting the passing lanes rather than seeing him attacking the basket, at least until his body fully matures. He is the best international player to make himself available for the draft this century.
